The House of Mending
Description
The House of Mending is a former abbey that now serves as a hospital space. This imposing fortified stone building is home to a staff of forty who use a combination of healing spells, natural herbal concoctions, enchanted healing potions and traditional practices to care for those in their charge. The building contains numerous wards filled with beds, but also has private sleeping chambers, conference rooms, huge storage chambers, a very good library and a chapel devoted to all the elder and kindred gods. In total, the House of Mending contains 400 beds, but at times of great need, this can be expanded to over 1000. Outside these walls, there is a large garden filled with a spectacular variety of medicinal plants and herbs. The House of Mending has its own cemetery where it buries those who were beyond their ability to save. The majority of the funding needed to keep this establishment in operationg comes from the government which pays for it with tax money. However, those who come seeking treatment are charged a small fee. This is to minimize abuse of the service. If the cost were free, every ache or sniffle might be an excuse for the average citizen to go to the House of Mending and this place would quickly be overwhelmed. Likewise, homeless beggars would fake ailments for a warm bed and a roof. The typical fee for treatment of a minor ailment and a night’s stay in the bed is a few copper pieces. Longer stays or serious conditions may incur a charge of a silver piece or two. It is enough to dissuade most commoners from "casual use".
